«Architecture is the spatial art through which society expresses its own time.»

«Architecture is the spatial art through which society expresses its own time.»

«Architecture is the spatial art through which society expresses its own time.»

Please, introduce yourself.

The added value of this project, “Una Nuova Generazione”, is the young team that is gradually forming: today we can count on Francesco Cassinari, Enrico Bertonazzi, Matteo Arietti, Bianca Felicori, Federico Riches, Michele Versaci, Matteo Ciabattini, Lorenzo Iatauro and Francesco Tornar (together with the Administration of the City of Crema and the Consulta Giovani Crema) to whom goes our thanks for the help they are giving us.

Our collective is always ready to welcome new members, in fact it is always in progress: for the planning of this 3 days event we have created a large network that brings together more than 50 people, most of whom are Architects.

As curators of the project, we would like to first of all specify that this is the first time ever that we start a real collaboration because of the different academic and professional experiences experienced over the years:

Andrea Bulloni graduated in Architecture in 2018 at Politecnico di Milano with a score of 110/110 discussing the thesis “Remixing architecture through urban culture: the Bronx revolution”, chosen as one of the best theses of the year and selected for to represent the Politecnico di Milano at the international competition between architecture schools of the Barcelona Biennale 2018. He worked more than 2 years in Milan for Archistudio (2012), Moa Architetti (2013) and LAND Srl (2013) where he gained experience in interior design, in architecture and landscape architecture, after which for another two years in the Netherlands by Karres en Brands Landscapearchitect (2014–15) and De Architekten CIE (2015–16). During this period, he took part in many national and international competitions. Since 2016 he is assistant professor in the course of Urban planning design studio of the Politecnico di Milano and is working as a Freelance architect and designer with Matteo Ciabattini (AAS).

Matteo Serra graduated in Architecture in 2018 at Politecnico di Milano with the thesis “Le Radici del Sacro – Architettura tra Individuo e Comunità” written with the contribution of Renato Rizzi, Alberto Ferlenga, Marco Biraghi, Guido Morpurgo, Luigi Trentin, Renato Vitiello and Annalisa De Curtis. In the year 2017/2018 participated in some international workshops: “Waliców Project, form and transformation: a Warsaw Memorial at the Warsaw Ghetto’s ruins” held in Warsaw at Wydział Architektury PW, “Living in Marrakech” held in Marrakech at the Ecole Nationale d’Architecture de Marrakech and “MIAW 2018 – Living Periphery” held in Milan at Politecnico di Milano. In the meantime, he collaborated in the project for ICOM (International Council of Museum) “C’era ancora una volta – Attraverso la fiaba, il museo come laboratorio del presente” curated by Marco Biraghi, Annalisa De Curtis, and Andrea Vercellotti. During his studies he worked for some professional studios in Milan. In 2016 he moved to Málaga for an Erasmus experience at the Esquela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura eAM of the Universidad de Málaga UMA.

How did you find your way into the field of Architecture?

Saying that we have found a “way to follow” in such a wide and complex field as Architecture is not simple. Let’s say that the road we are following is not so much in the direction of a specific field of research, but rather is the constant search for quality: quality of design, quality of spaces, quality of realization of the work. As recent graduate architects we are trying to build our professional identity step by step. Architecture is a maze of possibilities and embraces countless sectors and fields of research: with this project, “Una Nuova Generazione”, we want to focus more on the figure of the Architect (and his fundamental role in the well-being of the city) on the Architecture itself and, above all, we want to underline how important and profound the contribution of the new generation of architects can be.

What comes to your mind, when do you think about your studies?

Our school was Politecnico di Milano (first University in Italy and ninth in the world in importance for its Faculty of Architecture). It was a great privilege to study and learn in the school where they studied great Architects such Giò Ponti, Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Giuseppe Terragni, Marco Zanuso, Renzo Piano, Stefano Boeri and Cino Zucchi (just to name a few, the list is very long). Undoubtedly, here we have learned the importance of working with commitment and dedication: Politecnico di Milano has made us aware and responsible Architects.

How would you characterize Milan as the location for architects? How is the context of this place influencing your work?

Milan itself and Italian architecture played a fundamental role in defining the modern movement: Giovanni Michelucci, Piero Portaluppi, Adalberto Libera, Marcello Piacentini, Pierluigi Nervi, Figini and Pollini, Giovanni Muzio and Luigi Caccia Domignoni are just some of the names that has made the history of global architecture and, today, international studies such as Cino Zucchi, Stefano Boeri and Michele De Lucchi have established themselves on the international scene for their elegant and quality style. The Milanese context is in itself a difficult context: it asks to innovate a refined and intellectual tradition, remaining unique, elegant and innovative without disrespecting the city.

What is the essence of architecture for you personally?

Architecture is the spatial art through which society expresses its own time. The anthropized space is the projection of a space conceived on the physical space which, as a consequence of this action, acquires an identity and becomes a place.

Your master of architecture?

A Book: «A thousand years of nonlinear history» Manuel De Landa, MIT Press, Swerve, Edition 2000
A Person: Rem Koolhaas
A Building: Fun Palace, Cedric Price, 1961

How would you describe the relationship between theory and practice?

We have always found the word “theory” strange in architecture: many of the greatest masters are mostly “practical students of architecture” and those whose works have never been realized have always used “design” as a means of representation of a “hypothetical” scenario. The theory of architecture has always represented the subtle barrier between reality and desire, tradition and innovation, poetry and construction.

“Una Nuova Generazione”
Milan
2018

“Una Nuova Generazione” is a cultural project conceived by Andrea Bulloni and Matteo Serra, to be held at the Civic Museum of Crema and Cremasco from 19 to 21 October.

The place historically elected by the community as the cradle of its identity is confirmed as a space for discussion, dealing with a central theme for the community itself: the role of Architecture in the well-being of the city. It does so through the eyes of 22 young local architects, who showcase their master thesis projects, with the curatorship of two young professionals and the fundamental support of the Consulta Giovani of the City of Crema that made the project possible: the work of a new generation.

Within this framework are developed the three days full of initiatives that are articulated, symbolically and physically, around the exposure of the theses of the 22 recent graduates who responded to the open call.
The exhibition, the focus of the event and open from Friday 19 to 19.30, until the conclusion of the event on the evening of Sunday 21, will be set up in the cloister spaces, reinterpreted for the occasion by the exhibition designed by the two curators.

To welcome visitors, to the introduction of the curators Andrea Bulloni and Matteo Serra, will be added the institutional greetings of the Mayor of Crema Stefania Bonaldi, the Deputy Mayor Michele Gennuso and the President of the Consulta Giovani Crema Giorgio Cardile.

The more than 100 drawings, divided into 8 research themes, will be arranged along the entire development of the arcade, respecting and underlining the compositional rule but subverting the traditional linear circulation in favor of a dynamic path that, thanks to the arrangement of the exhibition elements, allows unprecedented use.

Starting from a series of design ideas developed for the city of Crema, the time of the visit is marked by the succession of suggestions and reflections on the main themes that Contemporary Architecture is called to deal with: Landscape, Reuse and Restoration, Housing and Tertiary, Culture, Urban Planning, Sustainability and Technology, Experimentation.

The arrangement of the 30 architectural models inside the courtyard is in contrast with the formal coherence of the display of the drawings: the models, turned towards the entrance, welcome the visitors in a suggestive “garden of the maquettes” untying themselves from the regularity of orders and themes to highlight the common root of all the works on show: Architecture.

The opening of the event to a multi-generational dialogue with the community is guaranteed by the rich series of collateral activities at the exhibition that will animate the beautiful spaces of the city museum.

The morning of Friday 19 (before the opening of the exhibition) is dedicated to a moment of orientation for high school students through the testimony of 8 young professionals who, starting from a common architectural training, operate in different ways and with different looks in planning and cultural landscape. The speakers, Andrea Bulloni, Bianca Felicori, Francesco Cassinari, Federico Riches, Matteo Arietti, Matteo Ciabattini, Matteo Serra and Michele Versaci collaborate or have collaborated with various companies operating on a national and international scale, including: Accademia Adrianea, Artribune, Atelien, Atelier Du Pont, CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati, De Architekten Cie, Domus, ETH Zurich, Karres En Brands, LAN, LAND srl, Migliore + Servetto Architects, Nieto Sobejanos, Park Associati, Politecnico di Milano, TuDelft, UMA Malaga and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.

The morning of Saturday 20 is instead dedicated to a moment of discussion and debate starting from the personal reflections of some esteemed professionals and academics around the theme of the “role of the architect in the well-being of the city”. This framework also includes the exceptional testimony of Luciano Galimberti, architect and president of ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, which sponsors the event together with Fondazione ADI – Comapasso d’Oro.

Moreover, it will be Galimberti who, after presenting the themes of the morning together with the curators, the mayor Stefania Bonaldi and the deputy mayor Michele Gennuso, will present the following speakers: prof. Elisa Cristiana Cattaneo, prof. Grazia Concilio, prof. Davide Ponzini, prof. Giulia Setti and prof. Alessandro Raffa of Politecnico di Milano, arch. Valeria Pagliaro from Land s.r.l. and arch. Ilaria Sangaletti from Pool Landscape.

The most significant activity that will characterize Saturday 20, a real test of the shared debate between the professionals and the participant community, will be a workshop open to all, focused on investigating and elaborating reflections for the city of Crema, more precisely for the central San Carlo district.
