Please, introduce yourself?

My name is Willi Wagner. I grew up in a small wine-growing region near Frankfurt. I currently live in Cologne and work in a small office in preparation for my master’s degree. Besides, I have my own little studio for architectural visualizations.

How did your way into the field of Architecture look like?

Unfortunately, there is no story to tell that begins with «since I was a little boy, I wanted to become an architect …» The truth is, deadlines were close and I had to decide very fast which direction I wanted to go. I’ve always been interested in architecture, art and design and I had to start with something, so I decided to study architecture. Within four years of study, a simple interest turned into a passion.

What does your working space look like?

What is the essence of architecture for you personally?

Creating buildings, spaces and sceneries that influence, guide and touch people. I love the fact that we create something out of the alleged nothing, influenced by what we occupy ourselves with, whether by buildings of other architects, painting, design, photography or nature. In this profession one never stops learning and developing – that’s awesome.

What is your favorite way to present your work?

Rendering / Collage – Sometimes a single picture is enough to explain an entire project and create a mood for the viewer.

Your master of architecture?

A Book: «The Images of Architects» – Valerio Olgiati, Quart Verlag, Luzern, 2013 — An inspiring collection of images in connection with the architecture of some great architects. It shows and underlines that you should not only be inspired by other architecture, but always have to broaden your horizons and be open to new topics and other related professions.

A Person: Peter Märkli — Not only because of his architecture, but above all because of what he teaches in his lectures and interviews.

A Building: House Without Qualities (›Haus ohne Eigenschaften‹) – Oswald Mathias Ungers, Cologne, 1994–95 — proportions, symmetries, abstraction.

The best advice you can give or the best advice you obtained?

Build a library as soon as possible. Do not spend your money on things you do not need, instead buy knowledge and inspiration in the form of books and magazines.

A question you would like to ask other architects?

When do you sleep?

A Theatre in Baleal, Portugal
Competition Entry
2018

A cultural destination. A place to celebrate the performance of arts. A stable design as an answer to the history of the site. Like the Fortress that once stood here, this building also radiates resistance, durability and steadiness. The design generates a very centered and introverted space with a focus on the performance itself, but also with specific references to the powerful natural scenery of the ocean and the sky through openings in the building envelope.
