Please, introduce yourself.

My name is Fabian Granhaugen. I am a Norwegian Architecture student living and studying at the Oslo school of architecture. I was interested in art and drawing from early on and gradually got more passionate over the years. In my work I focus on strong concepts that has something characteristic, an architecture that can talk for itself. This means for me an architecture which has a clear identity in form of space, materials and construction. I always ask my self, does this architecture have an atmosphere?

How did you find your way into the field of Architecture?

I came into the field of architecture in the same way as many others, by having a close relationship to the built environment and being aware of the surroundings and how these places has an impact on how we experience our lives. I wanted to be a part of this field and understand how places can be made in a way that touch peoples senses. A good architecture can guide people to stay here in this moment, I think.

What do you want to do when you have finished architecture school?

I want to work in the field of housing, perhaps in a small office where I can get in touch with clients and work with interesting materials and details. I also want to build a close relationship with good craftsmen that are passionate about what they do and learn from them. I want to work with architecture that gives something to the people that live there.

How would you characterize Oslo as location for architects (who want to start their own practice)? How is the context of this place influencing your work?

I think Oslo is a good place for architects whatever direction you want to go, whether it´s working in small or big office. I think there is also not that difficult to get a job, even though I have not worked for any office yet. If you just love and are passionate about what you are doing, people will share the same for your work.

What does your working place look like?

I like to move around and work in different places. Sometimes I like to be alone in a quiet space and sometimes together with others which is more loudly. I always have a pile of paper beside my computer and then the work happens from there.

What is the essence of architecture for you personally?

Guiding you to be aware of your surroundings, which is being present.

Your master of architecture?

A Book: «Thinking Architecture» by Peter Zumthor
A Person: Peter Zumthor
A Building: There are so many…

How do you choose to present architecture?

I am really interested in how I can communicate architecture visually, mainly in terms of pictures or images that show some qualities in the spaces I make. I like to give the viewer the opportunity to look for it, feel it and be there. Rendering is a good tool for those who don’t understand drawings, but there is always the drawings I make in which my projects and the architecture comes to life.

Housing Project in Kvadraturen
Oslo
2018

My last project was a housing and working project located in Kvadraturen, which is close to central Oslo. My intention was to bring more activity into the area by establishing a public space and making the quarter to a venue. Since most of the existing programs are offices and are left during the day, it was important to introduce programs as a library and a student housing in order to make the area more usable for a larger part of the day. This together with a clear architecture that is easy to understand and to read, was something that I focused on in this project, again in spaces, materials and construction.
